For as long as The Smashing Pumpkins have been in existence, fans have referred to frontman Billy Corgan as well … Billy Corgan. However, it looks like we’ve all been going about it the wrong way these past 30 or so years.

After fans sang happy birthday during a show in Lima this past week, the famed Chicago cat lover set the record straight, declaring: “My name is not Billy. My name is William.” The crowd, enamored with the fancy name change, erupted with chants of “William!”, to which Corgan replied, “My mother thanks you, in Heaven.”

William sounds very “professor tweed jacket” to me, and I doubt archenemy Anderson Cooper will oblige, but I’ll make the effort for Mama Corgan. Check out fan-caught footage of Billy William laying down the law in Peru.
